Former Students of Scoil Ide Naofa win a Thrilling County U14 Camogie Final
Killeedy under 14 camogie team had an outstanding win in the under 14 camogie county final in September 2020. The backbone of this team were former students of Scoil Ide Naofa, Raheenagh which included Cliodhna Shanahan, Emma Meehan, Jodie O Connor, Aoife Curtin, Amber O Sullivan Hunt, Alison Davis, Eabha Kelly, Caoimhe Green and Caoimhe Magner Flynn. These girls had already achieved great success with the Scoil Ide Naofa in winning the Primary Schools Camogie County final in June 2018 as well as the Desmond Colleges Camogie blitz in October, 2018. The girls had benefited hugely from the training sessions with Mr. Reidy and Mr. English over the previous few years and went on to bring home the silverware for the School and Killeedy Camogie Club.
Killeedy lined out in Ballingarry to play Croagh in the under 14 county final on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The team panel had nine former students from Scoil Ide Naofa , Raheenagh.
The first quarter of the match was a tightly fought battle and a tense affair with the first score taking 8 minutes to be recorded when Caoimhe Magner Flynn opened the scoring with a point from a free for Killeedy. The Killeedy girls were under pressure with Croagh having a lot of possession in the first quarter but Killeedy backs were relentless with Cliodhna Shanahan leading the troops at half back and winning a lot of ball. Alison Davis at corner back cleared ball after ball with Emma Meehan steady and cool at full back and driving the sliotars out to keep Killeedy in the game. However, Croagh overtook Killeedy and the scoreboard read Croagh 1-2 to Killeedy 0-1 at the fourteenth minute in the game. Just before the first water break, Killeedy won a free and Orlaith Shanahan struck a long ball landing it into the square and Caoimhe Magner Flynn doubled on it sending it to the back of the net. The score at the end of the first quarter was Croagh 1-2 to Killeedy 1-1.
The second quarter of game was fast paced with Cliodhna Shanahan mopping up and clearing a lot of ball at wing back and ably supported by the other backs, giving very little space to the opposition. Emma Meehan caught a dangerous ball and made a great clearance down the field. Aoife Curtin worked very hard to score but Croagh blocked and hooked to great effect. Eabha Kelly played an excellent game in goals in the first half and struck a long puck out which Amber O Sullivan -Hunt won and went on a solo run and struck a mighty ball to rattle the back of the net bringing the score at half time to Croagh 1-3 to Killeedy 2-2.
Killeedy started the second half at a blistering pace with Lilly Mullane winning a ball and letting it off to Caoimhe Magner Flynn who gave a good hand pass to Amber who side stepped her player and outpaced the Croagh girls to rattle the net for a second time just one minute into the second half. Croagh redoubled their efforts and marked our girls very tightly depriving Eabha Kelly of a point. Eabha switched with Aoife Curtin who took charge in the goals for the second half and brought off some great saves. The score line read Killeedy 3-2 to Croagh 2-3 at the end of the third quarter.
The final quarter of the game started with only 2 points between the sides. Killeedy opened the scoring with a great point from play putting Killeedy 3 points ahead in the first minute of the game. Jodi O Connor at half forward played outstanding, winning ball after ball and provided a plentiful supply of ball into the full forward line where Eabha Kelly worked tirelessly to try and convert the scores. Croagh looked dangerous throughout the last quarter and Killeedy girls worked very hard to stop the Croagh forwards running at them.
In the last 3 minutes, Caoimhe Magner Flynn playing at centre forward won a ball on the 21 yard line and struck the ball on the run scoring a point for Killeedy and giving Killeedy a lead of 4 points. Croagh replied very quickly with a point which was followed by another point from Caoimhe Magner Flynn. This was followed quickly by another point from a free taken by Caoimhe. Alison Davis playing an outstanding game at corner back, grabbing and clearing numerous sliotars in the last quarter denying Croagh the opportunity to overtake Killeedy. The County final was an exciting and “nail biting “ game from start to finish with Killeedy winning by 4 points at the final whistle and Killeedy U14 players doing themselves and their club proud. Caoimhe Magner Flynn, Captain of Killeedy was presented with the County final Cup on behalf of the Killeedy team and Cliodhna Shanahan was selected as Player of the Match for an outstanding game at half back.
